New Beetle Species Found in Remote Arizona Cave

A newfound species of beetle has been discovered in remote caves in Arizona, boasting long antennae and slender legs with hairlike tufts.

The beetle, Eleodes wynnei, was named after its discoverer, Northern Arizona University researcher Jut Wynne.

Since 2005, Wynne and his colleagues have identified three new genera (the plural of genus, the taxonomic classification above species) and more than 20 new species of cave-dwelling arthropods in caves in the Grand Canyon region, according to a statement from Northern Arizona University.

He also discovered five new species from Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island and four new species at El Malpais National Monument in western New Mexico.

The newfound beetle occurs only in northwestern Arizona and southwestern Utah. Wynne said the experience of having a species named after him is humbling, but he's most concerned with providing good science and guidance on managing and conserving cave resources.

"Caves are one of the most sensitive habitats on our planet," he said. "At the same time, given their location underneath our feet, these ecosystems have been overlooked from a resource management perspective."

Wynne said several parks and monuments on the Colorado Plateau are working to change this practice. His experience working on Easter Island has shown that native species may still persist despite the drastic changes to the island's ecosystem over the last several hundred years.

Texans WR Johnson hurts groin, leaves practice

HOUSTON (AP) - Houston Texans receiver Andre Johnson has left practice with a pulled groin muscle.

Coach Gary Kubiak says Johnson's injury appears minor, but it may still force Johnson to miss "a few" practices.

Johnson missed nine games last season with hamstring injuries and was sidelined from the first organized team activities in the spring after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. The five-time Pro Bowl selection started Sunday morning's practice and pulled up during a one-on-one drill.

He watched the rest of the outdoor half of the workout with a towel wrapped around his head, then went to Reliant Stadium when the practice moved indoors.

State Baseball: Early Runs Propel Decorah to Class 3A State Championship Game

DECORAH ? Way back when, these Decorah Vikings weren?t very good.

?We were pretty mediocre the first half of the season,? Coach Dennis Olejniczak admitted.

Just look at them now, on the verge of the school?s first state baseball championship in 21 years after wiping off Sioux City Heelan, 7-2, Friday afternoon in a snappily played Class 3A semifinal at Principal Park.

There have been a lot of people quick to criticize Cedar Rapids Jefferson for the way it handled the recent dismissal of long-time softball coach Larry Niemeyer. Coincidentally, the 72-year-old Olejniczak has turned his club from chumps to possible champs in about a month and a half.

Decorah (28-10) plays No. 1 Dallas Center-Grimes (35-2) for the title Saturday night at 6. It?s the sixth trip to the finals for the Vikings, their first since 1992.

Their last championship was 1991.

?I don?t know. I guess we just started having a different mindset,? said sophomore pitcher Kyle Kane, who improved to 12-1 by effectively throwing the first five innings.

?We?ve really jelled as team, I think,? added shortstop Jacob Kvale. ?We hold each other accountable for what we need to get done. If we don?t get something done that we should have, we let each other know about it ? We play as a team. There is no one person on this team above anyone else. It?s a great situation.?

The Vikings scored three times each in the first and second innings to take a surprising 6-0 lead against higher-seeded Heelan (6 against 2). The Crusaders booted and threw the ball around, but Decorah also hit it, with seven of its eight hits coming in that span.

Kvale?s run-scoring single up the middle in the third made it a 7-1 game and was the final Vikings baserunner. Kale Provost came on in relief for Heelan (35-11) and retired the final 10 hitters he saw, but Kane and reliever Landon Ashbacher kept the Crusaders at bay, with help from their defense, which had three double plays.

?Heelan is a good hitting team, we knew that,? Kvale said. ?So we knew that we?d have to come out and score runs. That was the mentality we had. We couldn?t sit around and wait for them to strike first. We had to make sure we jumped on top. Our pitchers really did a nice job of shutting them down today. I can?t say enough about their performance: Kyle and Landon.?

Olejniczak can?t say enough about the performance he has seen from his kids. A 16-1 record down the stretch isn?t bad.

?In the second half of the season, with the first game of the second half of our conference season, we?ve played Decorah baseball,? he said. ?It?s our style of baseball. We don?t backhand (a grounder) unless we?re absolutely desperate. I want the ball to hit my body ? We do things pretty old fashioned. Fortunately, it still works.?

?Coach has pushed to be where we?re at right now, and that?s great,? Kvale said. ?He?s a lot of fun, he has a lot of energy. He really keeps us going with his energy, we feed off of it. It makes practice fun. It?s never dull. He always pushes us to be our best, and that?s something that we appreciate.?

Olejniczak ? who has 1,294 career wins ? already has signed a contract to return for his 50th season at Decorah next year.

?These kids, and I say this from the bottom of my heart, are pretty much like the kids I started coaching in 1963 and ?64,? he said. ?Our kids are still pretty cooperative. Now we?ve got a kid or two that has balked and bucked a little bit on the team, too. But they?ve come back into the fold.

?I asked them last year ?What?s better, commom sense or knowledge?? They said different things. I told them ?Well, why can?t we have both?? Some of them have gotten a lot more common sense in the second half of this year, knowing that there are people that want to help them that they weren?t listening to the first half of the season.?

In Defense of Short Fiction (And Other Bite-Sized Writings) ? noah

Maybe six months or so ago, my dad bought a Kindle with his credit card points. While my own personal reading tastes tend toward the paper-and-ink variety, I have to admit that my father?s increased reading habits have helped me to see the value of e-readers in keeping our little art alive, or even expanding its reach. My dad, a self-proclaimed hater of reading throughout high school and college, until he met my mother, had still?in my memory?never strayed too far away from his rather light suspense novels and, on the other hand, incredibly dense civil war histories. But the acquisition of his Kindle has brought my father out of the worlds of Robert Ludlum and Shelby Foote and into a wider array of reading choices. With a Kindle he can download, for free no less, selected works by lesser known mystery writers he might like to try, as well as?and more importantly to me, at least?public domain works by famous dead authors. As soon as he figured out how it all worked, he searched around online for a list of the ?100 Best Novels of the 20^th Century? and got to work. Still, it came as quite the surprise when my dad told me he?d begun reading James Joyce?s Ulysses, an academic behemoth so intimidating I?ve yet to attempt it. And I say that while also considering Infinite Jest to be my very favorite book. Along the way, my dad also came to enjoy authors as wide ranging as Jeffrey Eugenides (whose entire oeuvre was quickly devoured) and Willa Cather, Zadie Smith and Dostoevsky. Lolita and the previously mentioned Infinite Jest are also on his reading list.

Anyway, my point isn?t to declare e-readers the savior of fiction as we know it, though I do think the device has its merits. What occurred to me, and my father, as we sat and discussed his newfound taste, at age fifty-six, in literary fiction, is that all it might take to popularize literary writers (and reading itself, by extension) among a broader audience is accessibility. Encouragement. Because of fiction?s economic model, the books that get heavily advertised are those by writers like James Patterson, with his awkward TV commercials, Jodi Picoult, with her legion of fans, and?perhaps sadly?EL James, with the mainstream success of her erotic fiction. Don?t get me wrong, I?m not trying to start an argument here about the merits of literary vs. commercial writing, or whether one writer is more deserving of success than another?frankly, I don?t care. What seems obvious, though, is that people?being the social creatures we are, often incapable of making our own decisions?read what we are told to read or see other people reading. Maybe, if we?re hipsters, we read what we?ve heard is cool and obscure, to impress people with the breadth of our taste. Aggressive marketing wins readers, and readers win more readers. It seems incredibly simple, and I?m wondering why no one talks about it too much. Maybe my complete lack of knowledge about the intricacies of the publishing business mean I?m wrong, but honestly I think it has more to do with the comfortable, expected culture of writing, reading, and publishing. We?ve all become entrenched in our camps, too happy with the status quo to wonder if there?s a better way to do things. And I don?t mean some huge revolution, just some modest rethinking.

The assumption that lofty literary goals and the desire for quickly consumable entertainment are mutually exclusive is predicated on the economic strategies of publishers, who see only novels (and often only beach fiction) as financially viable for mass publication and aggressive marketing, but also on the attitudes of literary writers and readers, who?I believe?cling to the false dichotomy of literary v. commercial mostly as a way to believe they?we?are smarter and have tastes that set us apart. Taking a step back into reality, it actually looks to me as if the difference is that we?re encouraged to have these tastes, to try these writers and their stories, while the average reader is never given a hint of their existence. And whose fault is that? The writers?, the readers?, or the publishers???If my dad?who, like so many reading Americans, has a bachelor?s degree but no real academic background in literature?could choose with his own free will to read Ulysses, I can?t see any real argument convincing me other average, educated Americans wouldn?t be willing to dip their toes into literary fiction.?And what better entry point than the short story?

Take any introductory course to journalism, mass media, what-have-you, and you?ll be informed about the American public?s short attention span and general inability to pay attention to anything longer than a few hundred words. The dissemination strategies of all major media outlets illustrate this perfectly: newspapers rely on an opening sentence that provides the reader with enough information to skip the actual article; television relies and sensationalism and sound-bites; and radio talk shows entertain their necessarily passive audience with inane arguments, fear-mongering, and pseudo-debates. All these forms of media rely on brief reports of some sort or another to keep readers, watchers, and listeners engaged enough to keep buying, subscribing, or tuning in. Why, then, is the novel pretty much the only medium of choice for popular, widely-read fiction?

In one of our increasingly common discussions of fiction, which had turned to short fiction and its apparent lack of popularity, my dad agreed: it seems ludicrous that our short attention spanned American readers are encouraged only to read novels. A short story can do a lot of things thanks to its unique form, and a writer can have unabashedly literary goals without having to worry overmuch about whether or not his or her reader is going to stop reading; it?s only a short story?they?ll power through it.?Nothing against the novel?it should and probably always will be popular?but it?s a mystery to me how people don?t hold the same expectation for the short story: what an accessible world of fiction for the busy reader! What a convenient entry into literary fiction!??There?s great appeal in bite-sized media, fiction included, and what proof?s better than my dad heading out to get the last few Best American Short Stories collections after our conversation. But still, the short story remains relatively obscure in terms of popular fiction; it?s a writer?s medium, or an academic?s.

In his intro to The Best American Short Stories 2007, guest editor Stephen King relates an excursion to his local ?mega-bookstore,? where he hopes to find some short stories via the massive magazine section: ?I go in,? he writes, ?because it?s just about time for the new issues of Tin House and Zoetrope: All-Story, two Best American mainstays over the years. I don?t expect a new Glimmertrain, though it wouldn?t surprise me to find one.? His search is largely frustrating; he does find copies of The New Yorker and Harper?s without looking too hard, both magazines that maintain a fiction feature, often hidden in the back or in type so tiny that his ?eyeballs? feel like they have been ?sucked halfway out of their sockets.? A few other journals are found, but in locations so remote and inconvenient that they aren?t visible unless King gets on his knees to look. Here, he points out, their beautiful covers won?t attract anyone. At my own local bookstore, I?m hard-pressed to find any literary journals, though one thing both King and I see right upon entering is a table full of best-sellers: Danielle Steele, James Patterson, King himself. As King says about this stuff, his own work included, ?Most of this stuff is disposable, but it?s right up front where it hits you in the eye as soon as you walk in, and why? Because money talks and bullshit walks.? King?s intro, while declaring the American short story unwell, stops short of offering solutions. Talent rises to the top, he says, and points toward the success of writers in the collection like TC Boyle, etc. Though the short story is ill, and its relegation to the bottom shelf discouraging to any top-notch writers who might want to attempt it post-MFA, it?s the fault of a largely uninterested public. True. But why is the public so uninterested?

Because publishers, the gatekeepers of success and sales in the writing and reading industry, make no effort to popularize or promote short fiction. You write short stories in grad school, almost certainly, and maybe a few get published?one makes it into Best American, and suddenly you?ve hit it big. Not financially speaking, but you know. You market your collection to a few agents, some publishers, but with little success. From writers I?ve talked to, this seems to be a pattern?the to-be-expected life of a post-grad school author with a book of short stories. Publishers might even love your work, especially your award winners and anthologized pieces, but they just want to know if you have a novel. Maybe your collection gets published via one of those annual writing contests, where an indie publisher invites a guest editor to pick one lucky writer?s stuff to get published as a book. But let?s be honest?these presses rarely have the means to heavily publicize your work in any way that would reach a broad, non-literary audience. (Disclaimer: I love these presses.)

Meanwhile, James Patterson?s wearing a blazer and a mock turtleneck in a black studio, making a commercial that?s going to make you feel uncomfortable during the news or your baseball game. Women?s magazines?hell, even magazines like The New Yorker?are publishing excerpted novels as short fiction, serving mostly to market the upcoming book. The bestseller lists are full of novels by authors both commercial and literary, but a short story collection peeking in is the rarest of rarities. If this all sounds like a set-up for me to declare the short story is dead, it isn?t. There?re plenty of acclaimed authors who have thus far made careers of primarily being short story writers: ZZ Packer comes to mind, as do Alice Munro and Raymond Carver, and a number of established novelists have also found success and popularity with their short fiction?Junot Diaz, George Saunders, and even Stephen King, just to name a few. I?ve found a great deal of pleasure in the shorter works of Updike and Wallace, myself. As Ben Marcus told me in a masterclass during college, many writers are having success getting their short story collections published. It?s a myth to think the short story will die or cease to exist. This is true, but I stand by my argument that, the way things are now, the short story exists as a medium primarily by and for writers and English majors (or, of course their teachers), and rarely encountered by anyone else. And this is not only unfortunate, but also foolish.

And yet, I have the tiniest bit of entrepreneurial acumen, and I recognize why the big, important publishers do what they do. It?s all about making money. Publishers aren?t willing to take a risk: they know Patterson?s next Alex Cross novel is going to sell; they don?t have the same confidence in some baseball bildungsroman with a gay relationship. But look, it did! Chad Harbach?s The Art of Fielding?made a bunch of year-end ?Best Of? lists and is now a best seller. It?s literary fiction, but?gasp!?it?s also easy to read and uncomplicated: entertaining. Because the publishing industry is a business, not a charity for the arts, I can understand why it?s all about the bottom line. Taking a risk on some literary author who might sell a butt-load of books just isn?t worth it when you?ve got something else that you?re sure will. And I harbor no ill-will to popular and commercially successful writers; all I?m saying is that, with a little publicity effort, there?s plenty of room in popular fiction for the literary. But that?s why I think the short story (and, to some extent, the personal essay, poem, etc.) offers a near-perfect opportunity to hook lifetime casual readers into the world of literary fiction?it?s short, requires less time and extended attention than a novel, and can offer a wide range of ideas, plots, characters, and entertainment potential, especially in collections or journals. The short story is perfect for American readers, they just need to be given a clue where to start. And it?s perfect for those of us who?d like to see literary fiction get a little facetime with the general public. All it would take is a little attention, some encouragement from the powers-that-be: Here bookstore browser, a collection of thrilling short stories, right here on the recommended reading table! Here, girl on the train reading a Jennifer Weiner novel, try one or two of these short stories. They?re wonderful, aren?t they?

The Physical Side of Falling in Love
?Why Do My Insides Go All Funny??
Falling in love is both a mental and a physical process. Some of the first techniques you will learn
ignite your Quarry?s physical response to you before his or her brain catches up. We will put love
through the brain-scanner and under the x-ray machine to examine what physically happens to your
Quarry when he or she starts to feel that incredible sensation called love.
?Does Somebody Have to Be Pea-Brained to Fall in Love with Me??
As a matter of fact, yes. Scientists tell us only PEA-brained people fall in love. At the core of
infatuation, they speculate, is a chemical called phenylethylamine, or PEA. It is a chemical cousin of
amphetamines and gives a similar ?kick.?
PEA comes from secretions through the nervous system and bloodstream that create an emotional
response equivalent to a high on drugs. This is the chemical which makes your heart palpitate, your
hands sweat, and your insides go all funny. (It is rumored that PEA can also make you want to rip
your Quarry?s clothes off at the first available opportunity.)
Phenylethylamine, scientists say, along with dopamine and norepinephrine, is manufactured in the
body when we first feel the physical sensations of romantic love. It is as close to a natural high as the
body can get. (Cole Porter obviously knew what he was singing about when he wrote ?I get a kick
out of you.?)
The bad news is that the kick doesn?t last forever, or even for very long. This adds to the quickly
mounting scientific evidence that romantic love is relatively short-lived. That?s why some people
become ?love junkies.? The good news is that it does last long enough to kick-start great love affairs.
Its average one-and-a-half to three-year duration is plenty of time to have a fantastic fling, get him or
her to say ?I do,? and/or propagate the species.
Now, since you can?t go around armed with a syringe filled with phenylethylamine, spot your
Quarry, and inject the PEA-filled tube into his or her bloodstream, you do the next best thing. You
develop techniques to trigger PEA-brained responses in people and give them the sensation that
they are falling in love.
?Why Do We Fall in Love with One Person and Not Another??
People don?t just mysteriously wake up one morning with an overdose of PEA in their brains and
then develop a crush on the next person they set eyes on. No, PEA and its sister chemicals are
precipitated by emotional and visceral reactions to a specific stimulus.
Like what? It can be a whiff of her perfume, the boyish way he says hello, or the adorable way she
wrinkles her nose when she laughs. It could even be an innocuous article of clothing you?re wearing
that drives your Quarry bonkers. For example, in 1924 Conrad Hilton, the founder of the Hilton
hotel chain, flipped over a red hat that he spotted sitting five pews in front of him in church. After the
services, he followed the red hat down the street and eventually married the lady walking under it.
?How Can These Little Things Start Love??
Why do these seemingly meaningless stimuli kick-start love? Where do they come from? Are they in
our genes?
No, genes have nothing to do with falling in love. The origin lies deeply buried in our psyche. The
ammunition that gets fired off when we see (hear, smell, feel) something we like is lying dormant in
our subconscious. It springs from that apparently bottomless well from which most of our personality
rises?our childhood experiences or, most significantly, what happens to us between the tender ages
of five and eight. When we are very young, a type of subconscious imprinting takes place, similar
to the phenomenon that occurs in certain species of the animal kingdom.
During the 1930s, an eminent Austrian ethologist, Dr. Konrad Lorenz, induced a flock of baby
ducks to become hopelessly attached to him. Observing how baby ducklings, shortly after hatching,
begin to waddle along in single file behind their mother?and continue to do so into maturity?Dr.
Lorenz decided to imprint the ducklings with himself.
Lorenz hatched a clutch of duck eggs in an incubator. At first sight of their little beaks breaking
through eggshells, he squatted low as if he were a mother duck and waddled past the eggs. They
promptly broke free and followed him across the laboratory. Thereafter, despite the presence of real
female ducks, these imprinted little ducklings continued to waddle after Dr. Lorenz on every possible
occasion.
Researchers have shown that the phenomenon of imprinting is not limited to birds. Various forms of
it exist among fish, guinea pigs, sheep, deer, buffalo, and other mammalian species. Are humans
immune to imprinting? Well, unlike the duped ducklings queued up behind Dr. Lorenz, we don?t
continue to crawl after the doctor who delivered us until we reach adulthood. But there is strong evidence that
we fall prey to another kind of imprinting?an early sexual imprinting.
Universally respected sexologist Dr. John Money coined the term Lovemap to describe this
imprinting. Our Lovemaps are carvings of pain or pleasure axed in our brains in early responses to
our family members, our childhood friends, and our chance encounters. The cuts are so deep that
they fester forever in some nook or cranny of the human psyche, just waiting to bleed again when
the proper stimulus strikes.
Dr. Money said, ?Lovemaps. They?re as common as faces, bodies, and brains. Each of us has one.
Without it there would be no falling in love, no mating, and no breeding of the species.?7 Your
Quarry has a Lovemap. You have a Lovemap. We all have Lovemaps. They are indelibly etched
into our egos, our ids, our psyches, our subconscious. They can be positive imprintings. For
example, perhaps your mother wore a certain perfume, your beloved father had a boyish grin, or
your favorite teacher scrunched up her nose when she laughed. Perhaps a beautiful lady in a red hat
was kind to little Connie Hilton when he was growing up in San Antonio, New Mexico.
Lovemaps can be negative, too. Women, maybe you were molested as a child, so now you can
never love a man with a leering smile. Men, maybe your cruel wicked aunt wore Joy perfume, so
now any woman who gives you a whiff of Joy makes you want to flee like a bug blasted with insect
repellent.
Lovemaps sometimes contain very convoluted paths. Early negative experiences can give them a
strange twist. Women, maybe your father ran off with another woman, leaving you and your mother
alone, so now, if your date so much as glances at a passing lady, you freak out. Gentlemen, perhaps
your beautiful baby-sitter spanked you when you were five, but it stimulated your little genitals and
felt good. So now, as an adult, you cannot fall in love with a woman unless she will give you love
spankings.

Big Fat Inspiration ? Dances With Fat

I like to meet other people who work in health and fitness ? especially those who work from a Behavior-Centered Health model.? A friend of mine, Dave, once tried to introduce me to the owner of a gym, we?ll call him Gary. Dave described me including the fact that I?m a fat athlete.

Gary was apparently confused about why we were being introduced and immediately said ?We wouldn?t want a trainer who was really big? because I would be a ?poor example?.? Dave told me the story and I shrugged it off ? certainly not the first time that I?ve been told that being a successful, healthy, happy, fat athlete is setting a bad example.

That same night I was at one of the Eating Disorder Facilities where I taught dance classes.? I found out that the girls had named me to their list of Role Models.? One of them told me that I was her hero. These are girls who have body dymorphia and an irrational fear of being fat.? And I, at 5?4 284 pounds, I made their list of role models.? It took everything in my power not to cry ? not just because I was honored but because those women inspire me.? They fight against near-impossible odds, they fall down over and over and they just keep getting back up.

The moral of the story here is that we don?t get to decide to whom we are an example, to whom we are an inspiration, or when.? We can only decide what we are an example of, and what we want to inspire.

I?ve written before about my feelings on inspiration.? Basically, that I believe that the only way you can inspire by someone is presenting a new option ? then they have to choose to walk toward or away from that option.? Just the other day I was watching Coach Carter (I have an unabashed love of all sports movies) and was reminded of this Marianne Williamson Quote:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be?? Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won?t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do.? It?s not just in some of us; it?s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

So, may I suggest that it can be kind of fun to ask yourself:? If someone were watching your life ? if they were looking to you as a role model ? what would you give them permission to do? Are you proud of what you are an example of?

I don?t ask this hypothetically? I can assure you that someone is looking to you.? For whatever reason ? someone you know is relating to you right now and looking to you for inspiration.? What are you inspiring them to consider?

I think that one of the most revolutionary acts that we can commit, at any size but especially as fat people, is to publicly with unabashedly love our bodies.? Sadly, in this culture if you wake up and don?t hate yourself you are committing an act of revolution. If you can model not hating yourself, you are a full on revolutionary, and you give other people permission to consider that their bodies just might possibly be amazing and worthy exactly as they are.

Love your body, and you give the world the chance to change.

Senate passes middle-class tax cut bill in symbolic move

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama's fellow Democrats in the Senate on Wednesday won passage of a bill to renew tax cuts for tens of millions of Americans while letting some rates rise for the wealthiest, in a symbolic vote.

The legislation, certain to be rejected by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, lets Democrats claim in advance of the November 6 elections that they passed tax cuts for most Americans only to be stymied by Republicans.

"We're in the middle of a partisan war all wound up in the crucible of an election year for president," Democratic Senator Bill Nelson said.

The Senate rejected a Republican alternative with the help of at least two Republicans. That bill would have extended the lower rates for all income levels including earnings above the $250,000 threshold.

House Republicans will advance their own symbolic bill next week extending the lower rates for all income levels. Neither bill is expected to become law.

The real movement on U.S. tax policy likely will play out in the weeks after the elections and before the scheduled December 31 expiration of tax cuts signed by former President George W. Bush.

The Democratic legislation advances Obama's re-election theme that the nation's fiscal and economic woes should be healed with more sacrifice by the wealthy - those making more than $250,000 in adjusted income a year.

Democrats and Republicans have jousted all year over the idea, with Republicans arguing it would choke off job growth at a time of high unemployment.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, argued, "The majority of Americans ... agree taxes should remain low for the middle class and the top 2 percent should pay their fair share to reduce the deficit."

Under the Democrats' bill, the Bush tax cuts would be extended through 2013, except on some income of the highest earners.

Income beyond the $250,000 threshold would be taxed at either 36 percent or 39.6 percent. That would be up from the current 33 percent and 36 percent for the top two income groups.

The Democratic bill is estimated to raise about $50 billion a year at a time of federal budget deficits that have been topping $1 trillion annually.

But the Senate cannot under the U.S. Constitution originate a tax measure -- that can only be done in the House -- which means the House will "blue slip" the Senate bill, or kill it.

"Ordinarily, Republicans would do everything we can to keep a plan as damaging as the Democrats' plan from passing," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said. "The only reason we won't block it today," he added, "is that we know it doesn't pass constitutional muster and won't become law, because it didn't originate in the House."
