LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? Ten-year-old Joanna Ramos died from blunt force trauma after emergency surgery for a blood clot on her brain, investigators and family members said.

As far as police can tell, the blow did not come from a weapon, or a wall, or a windshield, but only the fists of another young girl whom she fought hours earlier.

While the specific circumstances of Joanna's death are especially tragic and extremely unusual, medical experts said a blow in just the right spot can often prove fatal.

"This is rare, in that I've never seen it in a female, certainly not in a female adolescent," said Dr. Keith Black, a neurosurgeon at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Black, who was not involved in Joanna's medical care, sees such injuries all the time among older patients and said a blow to the head from one young girl to another could "absolutely" be sufficient to cause enough trauma to lead to death.

Punches to the head can often lead to delayed bleeding if a vein is torn, and that can lead to a clot when blood collects on the surface of the brain.

Coroner's Lt. Fred Corral said Ramos died of blunt force trauma to the head and said her death has been ruled a homicide, but he didn't immediately have further details about her injuries.

The finding rattled the already shaken school community at Willard Elementary, where Joanna attended the fifth grade. She died Friday, about six hours after a brief fight with another girl in an alley near the school in a working-class neighborhood in the port city of Long Beach.

Joanna, who would have turned 11 on March 12, was unconscious by the time she arrived at the emergency room and underwent emergency surgery for a blood clot on her brain late Friday after she began vomiting and complained of a headache, her older sister, 17-year-old Vanessa Urbina, told The Associated Press.

"After surgery the doctor said she was still alive, and then a few minutes later he comes back and tells us that her heart stopped and they couldn't bring her back," Urbina said, crying as she sat on the steps of the school near a memorial of flowers and balloons.

Police said they have made no arrests and were conducting an investigation that will be presented to prosecutors when it's completed.

Worried parents lingered as they dropped off their children Monday in a light rain and wondered aloud how the school, tucked a few blocks off a major city street, could have become the scene of such unexpected violence.

"I'm just so confused at this moment, thinking should I take my daughter out of this school," said Victoria Pyles, whose daughter started classes at the school last week. "If this is what is going on, I don't like it. It's very scary."

School officials believe the fight occurred near the school in a 15-minute window between the time school let out and the start of Joanna's after-school program at 2:30 p.m., said Chris Eftychiou, a spokesman for the Long Beach Unified School District.

Joanna didn't have any visible injuries or show any signs of distress for about an hour, but she eventually told staff she felt unwell and was picked up by a relative, he said.

Urbina, the older sister, said Joanna's cousin picked her up. After her mother retrieved her, Joanna vomited in the car all the way home and told her mother she felt sleepy and wanted to go to bed.

Symptoms ? such as headache, nausea, lethargy ? may not set in for hours and people can mistakenly think that they're fine, Black said.

Typically, he said, the hit to the head would have to be fairly significant to cause a blood clot and often involves the head hitting walls or the ground, but a punch is enough.

"You can certainly get enough of an impact to get enough movement in the brain by a fist to tear a vein, if it's in the right location," Black said.

Police have said the fight lasted less than a minute, did not involve weapons, and no one was knocked to the ground.

A friend of Joanna's saw her as she reported to the after-school program after the fight and said she had blood on her knuckles from wiping at a bloody nose, said Cristina Perez, the friend's mother.

Perez said her daughter, who is 10, heard about plans for the fight, apparently over a boy, during recess earlier in the day and knew to stay away from the alley after school.

Fights involving young children, including girls, are increasing nationally, in part because of the wired world children now live in, said Travis Brown, a national expert on bullying and school violence.

Children used to have a disagreement at school and would have a night or a weekend to cool down, but social media and text messaging mean students can continue their dispute 24 hours a day, he said.

"There was a time when a kid had a way to escape the things at school, but now there's no escape," Brown said. "That stuff just escalates to a point where it gets out of hand. This is an everyday occurrence."

After the colonoscopies and first round of chemical testing, cancer was detected equally in both groups. However, advanced adenomas were more likely to be found among those undergoing colonoscopy.

Editorialists conclude that ?colonoscopy is an effective screening test.? Although patients are more likely to accept chemical testing than colonoscopy, fecal testing ?is not a good test for detecting adenomas.?

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle.

The collapse of the ancient Mayan civilization may have been linked to relatively modest dry spells, researchers now say.

The?ancient Mayan empire?once stretched across an area about the size of Texas, with cities and fields occupying what is now southern Mexico and northern Central America, including the countries of Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador and Honduras. The height of the Mayan empire, known as the Classic period, reached from approximately A.D. 250 to at least A.D. 900.

The ancient Maya had what was arguably the most advanced civilization in the Americas. For instance, they made dramatic breakthroughs in astronomy that helped them very accurately predict where the moon and other planets would be in the sky centuries in the future. They also left behind many books and stone inscriptions regarding the?stories of their gods?and the history of their divine kings and queens.

For unknown reasons, the ancient Mayan civilization then disintegrated more than a millennium ago. The number of people declined catastrophically to a fraction of the empire's former size, and the ruins of its great cities are now largely overgrown by jungle. Scientists have long drawn connections between?the slow decline of the ancient Maya, which took about two centuries, "to climate change, and especially to drought," said researcher Mart?n Medina-Elizalde at the Yucatan Center for Scientific Research in Mexico. "No sound estimates had been made about the severity of this drought, but some have suggested extreme scenarios."

To see how much rainfall the ancient Maya saw before the demise of their civilization, the researchers combined the four most detailed records of past climate changes known regarding the civilization's collapse ? three from nearby lakes and one from a stalagmite, a mineral formation that grows upward from a cave floor. This helped develop a model of "the region's balance between evaporation and rainfall," Medina-Elizalde said.

The scientists found that rainfall in the region decreased episodically for periods as long as a decade at a time.

"Our results show rather modest rainfall reductions between times when the Classic Maya civilization flourished and its collapse between 800 to 950," said researcher Eelco Rohling, a paleoclimatologist at the University of Southampton in England. "These reductions amount to only 25 to 40 percent in annual rainfall, but they were large enough for evaporation to become dominant over rainfall, and open water availability was rapidly reduced. The data suggest that the main cause was a decrease in summer storm activity."

The timing of these dry spells might help explain why modest reductions in rainfall still may have helped cause the demise of a well-established civilization.

"Summer was the main season for cultivation and replenishment of Maya freshwater storage systems and there are no rivers in the Yucatan lowlands," Rohling said.

It appeared to Rohling that the ancient Maya had become reliant on continuous rainfall supplies, and had stretched the capacity of their farmlands to a fine limit based on normal levels of rain. "Then, even a rather subtle climatic change was enough to create serious problems," he told LiveScience. "Societal disruptions and abandonment of cities are likely consequences of?critical water shortages, especially because there seems to have been a rapid repetition of multiyear droughts."

Rohling emphasized they are not saying that climate ended the ancient Mayan civilization. "We are documenting that there was a reduction in rainfall, and that reservoirs of water were evaporating," he said. This may in turn have led to societal unrest or diseases or both, "which are more likely to explain the actual collapse of society."

The scientists noted that the droughts they saw during the demise of the ancient Mayan civilization were similar in severity to those projected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for the near future in the same region. [10 Surprising Results of Global Warming]

"There are differences too, but the warning is clear ? what seems like a minor reduction in water availability may lead to important, long-lasting problems," Medina-Elizalde said. Light-emitting nanocrystal diodes go ultraviolet

ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2012) ? A multinational team of scientists has developed a process for creating glass-based, inorganic light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that produce light in the ultraviolet range. The work, reported this week in the online Nature Communications, is a step toward biomedical devices with active components made from nanostructured systems.

LEDs based on solution-processed inorganic nanocrystals have promise for use in environmental and biomedical diagnostics, because they are cheap to produce, robust, and chemically stable. But development has been hampered by the difficulty of achieving ultraviolet emission. In their paper, Los Alamos National Laboratory's Sergio Brovelli in collaboration with the research team lead by Alberto Paleari at the University of Milano-Bicocca in Italy describe a fabrication process that overcomes this problem and opens the way for integration in a variety of applications.

The world needs light-emitting devices that can be applied in biomedical diagnostics and medicine, Brovelli said, either as active lab-on-chip diagnostic platforms or as light sources that can be implanted into the body to trigger some photochemical reactions. Such devices could, for example, selectively activate light-sensitive drugs for better medical treatment or probe for the presence of fluorescent markers in medical diagnostics. These materials would need to be fabricated cheaply, on a large scale, and integrated into existing technology.

The paper describes a new glass-based material, able to emit light in the ultraviolet spectrum, and be integrated onto silicon chips that are the principal components of current electronic technologies.

The new devices are inorganic and combine the chemical inertness and mechanical stability of glass with the property of electric conductivity and electroluminescence (i.e. the ability of a material to emit light in response to the passage of an electric current). As a result, they can be used in harsh environments, such as for immersion into physiologic solutions, or by implantation directly into the body. This was made possible by designing a new synthesis strategy that allows fabrication of all inorganic LEDs via a wet-chemistry approach, i.e. a series of simple chemical reactions in a beaker. Importantly, this approach is scalable to industrial quantities with a very low start-up cost. Finally, they emit in the ultraviolet region thanks to careful design of the nanocrystals embedded in the glass.

In traditional light-emitting diodes, light emission occurs at the sharp interface between two semiconductors. The oxide-in-oxide design used here is different, as it allows production of a material that behaves as an ensemble of semiconductor junctions distributed in the glass. This new concept is based on a collection of the most advanced strategies in nanocrystal science, combining the advantages of nanometric materials consisting of more than one component. In this case the active part of the device consists of tin dioxide nanocrystals covered with a shell of tin monoxide embedded in standard glass: by tuning the shell thickness is it possible to control the electrical response of the whole material.

Bitdefender Sphere

More and more vendors are recognizing that the old three-PC security suite subscription model is fast becoming obsolete. Modern users have more than three PCs, or a mix of PC, Mac, and mobile devices. When first released, Bitdefender Sphere ($99.95, direct) offered protection for three PCs, three Macs, and three Android devices. I'm pleased to say that last month the company upgraded the product to cover all the devices you own. Specifically, it covers all devices owned by up to three individuals in a household.

Not Unique
Bitdefender's protection is similar to that of McAfee All Access ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 4.5 stars), which protects all devices owned by an individual or, for $50 more, by a household of up to five individuals. McAfee does offer more choices for protection as well as an online console to manage all components of the subscription.

Norton One, now in pre-release pilot testing, protects five devices for $149.95, with an as-yet-unspecified incremental cost to add more devices. Like McAfee it features a comprehensive online console; premium-level tech support for all security problems is also included.

Kaspersky ONE Universal Security ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 3.5 stars) comes in three-, five-, and ten-license editions and lets the user allocate licenses to any combination of device types. Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security Premium Edition ($99.95 direct for? licenses, 3 stars) is a bundle of three licenses apiece for PC, Mac, and Android. If your devices don't come in threes, you might need two subscriptions.

Bitdefender and McAfee, with protection for any number and any type of devices, are clearly the most flexible of this crowd. Norton comes close with the option to add more devices for a fee, especially if the fee turns out to be small.

Full-Scale PC Protection
On each of your PCs, Bitdefender Sphere installs Bitdefender Total Security 2012 ($79.95 direct for three licenses, 4 stars). This full-featured suite takes a bigger chunk of disk space than most, but if you run it in Auto Pilot mode it takes care of security with no hassle. The independent test labs love Bitdefender, though its performance in my own antimalware tests was just average. Its phishing protection, on the other hand, is the best I've seen, even better than Norton 360 Version 6.0 ($79.99 direct for three licenses, 4.5 stars).

This suite's firewall handles security issues itself, without posing confusing conundrums for the untrained user. It accurately filters out spam while leaving good mail alone. An app for Facebook and Twitter identifies dangerous links and even offers to notify friends whose posts contain those inks. Online backup, file encryption and shredding, and system tune-up round out this impressive suite.

Antivirus Protection for Mac
Norton One and McAfee All Access can install a full protective suite for Macs; McAfee All Access will optionally install antivirus alone. Like Kaspersky One and Trend Micro Premium, Bitdefender Sphere offers straight antivirus protection for Macs. Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac will scan for threats on demand, on schedule, and in real time. It also detects and eliminates PC viruses. True, these can't harm your Mac, but you wouldn't want to pass them around to PCs on the network.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The country's largest cable TV companies are shutting down the bulk of a venture that let viewers interact with TV ads, laying off 120 employees.

Four-year-old Canoe Ventures made it possible for viewers of eight cable networks, including AMC, Bravo and Discovery, to request information by mail from TV advertisers by pressing a button on the remote. It was accessible in 25 million households.

However, the technology didn't catch on with advertisers, prompting the shutdown.

The firm said Wednesday that it will close its New York headquarters and lay off most of its staff over the new few months.

Canoe will keep 30 to 35 employees in Denver to work on advertising systems for video-on-demand services. That includes services that cable companies are rolling out for viewing on tablet computers, phones and personal computers.

CEO Kathy Timko is among those laid off. She was replaced by former Chief Technology Officer Joel Hassell.

Canoe was set up by Comcast Corp., Cox Communications Inc., Time Warner Cable Inc., Charter Communications Inc., Cablevision Systems Corp. and Bright House Networks.

The shutdown of Canoe's interactive advertising system doesn't mean that type of ad will go away completely. Cable companies have their own interactive ad systems they use for small, local campaigns.

Early on, Canoe had a second mission: to make it possible to target cable-TV advertising down to the neighborhood level. That plan was scrapped in 2009 due to technical difficulties.

Wednesday's shutdown was reported earlier on the website of Multichannel News, a pay-TV trade magazine.

Making Memories: NKY Girls Night!

Friday night I?headed north for a?girls night with some of my favorite college friends! The normally 90ish minute drive took?over two hours because of traffic, but nothing was stopping me from?seeing these dear sorority sisters!?We try to get together once a month,?but took?the?past few months off because of the holidays and homecoming.?

Mandy hosted this month's event in her goregous NEW home! The layout is fantastic with lots of room to sleep future babies. :)?(Her son Gavin was born in July and should be a baby model because he is so darn cute!)

Mandy made salad, rice, tacos and enchiladas and everyone else brought dips, sides, wine and desserts to complete the meal. Everything was SO good!

There were 13 chatty girls in attendance and we discussed everything from relationships, engagements, weddings, babies, jobs, running (four of us are training for half or full marathons!) and more. There is never a quiet or dull moment when we are together!
