Lies, Damned Lies, and Quantum Statistics?

Statistics has a bad reputation, and has had for a long time, as demonstrated by Mark Twain's famous quote that I paraphrased to use as the title of this blog post.

Of course physics is supposed to be above the fudging of statistical numbers to make a point. Well, on second thought, theoretical physics should be above fudging (in the experimental branch, things are not so clear cut).

Statistical physics is strictly about employing all mathematically sound methods to deal with uncertainty. This program turned out to be incredibly powerful, and gave a sound foundation to the thermodynamic laws. The latter were empirically derived previously, but only really started to make sense once statistical mechanics came into its own, and temperature was understood to be due to the Brownian motion. Incidentally, this was also the field that first attracted a young Einstein's attention. Among all his other accomplishments, his paper on the matter that finally settled the debate if atoms were for real or just a useful model is often overlooked. (It is mindboggling that within a short span 0f just 40 years ('05-'45) science went from completely accepting the reality of atoms, to splitting them and unleashing nuclear destruction).

Having early on cut his teeth on statistical mechanics, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Einstein's last great contribution to physics went back to this field. And it all started with fudging the numbers, in a far remote place, one that Einstein had probably never even heard of.

In the capital of Bangladesh, a brilliant but entirely unknown scholar named Satyendra Nath Bose made a mistake when trying to demonstrate to his students that the contemporary theory of radiation was inadequate and contradicted experimental evidence. It was a trivial mistake, simply a matter of not counting correctly. What added insult to injury, it lead to a result that was in accordance with the the correct electromagnetic radiation spectrum. A lesser person may have just erased the blackboard and dismissed the class, but Bose realized that there was some deeper truth lurking beneath the seemingly trivial oversight.

What Bose stumbled upon was a new way of counting quantum particles. Conventionally, if you have two particles that can only take on two states, you can model them as you would the probabilities for a coin toss. Lets say you toss two coins at the same time; the following table shows the possible outcomes:

It is immediate obvious that if you throw to coins the combination head-head will have a likelihood of 25%. But if you have the kind of "quantum coins" that Bose stumbled upon then nature behaves rather different. Nature does not distinguish between the states tails-head and head-tails i.e. the two states marked green in the table. Rather it just treats these two states as one and the same.

In the quantum domain nature plays the ultimate shell game. If these shells were bosons the universe would not allow you to notice if they switch places.

This means, rather than four possible outcomes in the quantum world, we only have three, and the probability for them is evenly spread, i.e. assigning a one-third chance to our heads-heads quantum coin toss.

Bose found out the hard way that if you try to publish something that completely goes against the conventional wisdom, and you have to go through a peer review process, your chances of having your paper accepted are almost nil (some things never change).

Spain charges two Chechen Al-Qaeda suspects for terror

A Spanish judge on Sunday charged two Chechen members of Al-Qaeda with belonging to a terrorist group and possessing bomb-making material, authorities said.

The two men were arrested Wednesday as they headed on a bus for the French border. Another man, a Turk, was arrested in a flat in the southern province of Andalucia, where police discovered the explosives.

Judge Pablo Ruz, who ordered the two Chechens jailed, based his decisions on information provided by US, French, Russian and Gibraltar authorities.

He said he could see connections between the two Chechens and other people who had been investigated for terrorist group ties.

Those charged Sunday are Eldar Magomedov, who also goes by the name Ahmad Avar, and Muhamed Ankari Adamov.

According to Spanish court documents, US authorities provided information showing that Magomedov had participated in "terrorist activities" in Waziristan, Pakistan and Afghanistan since 2010.

Russia also supplied "information linking the detainee to terrorist organisations of an international character, locating him from 2010 on Pakistan and Afghanistan territory," said the documents.

The Turkish man was identified as Cengiz Yalcin, who was ordered detained Friday after Spain's interior minister said investigators had evidence suggesting the trio were planning attacks in Europe.

The judge accused Yalcin of "possession of explosive substances and devices with terrorist aims", but did not agree with prosecutors that the man belonged to a terrorist group.

After the men's arrest Wednesday, Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz said investigators had a "clear indication" the men had been planning an attack in Spain or elsewhere in Europe.

He called the suspects "extremely dangerous people", including one who was "a very important operative in Al-Qaeda's international structure".

The judge's decision released Sunday say video evidence seized from Yalcin could "rationally suggest the preparation" of an attack and that the explosives found in the Turk's home had a "seriously deadly potential."

Given the links between the three men since May, and given that Yalcin had "paid for the travel expenses and journey to Spain" for the two Chechens, the judge decided to charge the two also for possession of explosives.

The Chechens say they came to Spain to seek asylum and have denied all charges, as has the Turk.

Authorities have thwarted several suspected jihadi operations in Spain in recent years, especially in the Catalonia and Valencia regions.

On March 11, 2004, bombs exploded on packed commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and wounding 1,841 others in attacks linked to Al-Qaeda.

Ex-president Truman's grandson visits Hiroshima

The grandson of former US president Harry Truman, who authorised the atomic bombing of Japan during World War II, visited Hiroshima on Saturday before the 67th anniversary of its devastation.

Clifton Truman Daniel, 55, toured the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and offered a silent prayer for victims of the 1945 wartime nuclear bombing, press reports said.

He was the first Truman relative to attend the anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima on August 6 and Nagasaki three days later.

After visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, the former US president's eldest grandson told reporters he was struck most by the "message of peace the entire city is devoted to," according to Kyodo news agency.

Tens of thousands of people attend services every year to remember the more than 200,000 people estimated to have died in the bombings, either instantly or later from burns and radiation sickness.

In Brazil, where young workers have typically opted to join large corporations in the public or private sector, statistics now confirm a rise in young entrepreneurs choosing instead to run their own franchise. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, the number of Brazilians aged 18 to 24 that attempted entrepreneurship increased by 74% between 2002 and 2010, with the franchising model being the simplest and safest way to run their own business. The sector has experienced a 10-13% average annual increase since 2002, generated a profit of $44 billion USD in 2011 (89 billion reals), and is responsible for 837,000 jobs.

The greatest draw towards franchising for Brazilians has been the slimmer chances of failure due to its business model. According to business support organization Sebrae, the risk of business failure for Brazilians in franchising drops from 80% to 15%. The strikingly lower success rate has resulted from several factors, explains Jaqueline Costa of Sebrae, including the franchiser's developed methodology and communication strategies, preexisting suppliers, knowledge of target markets, and a brand that is typically established with well-known products.

Although there is an attractive element of security that comes with opening a franchise, Brazilians also admit that there are still risks involved with franchising. Initially, the entrepreneur must be able to decipher whether or not the brand is popular, how it is doing in the market, and if there are any restrictions that come with opening a new franchise. The franchising model of business also heavily restricts the entrepreneur's creativity, seeing as everything associated with a franchise is already set to standardized measurements.

In spite of the risks, Brazil's franchising boom continues to show no signs of slowing down, and it is expected to grow by 15% in terms of profit in 2012. While there are currently 2,031 brands in Brazil, that number is also expected to grow by 10% this year, making Brazil one of the largest countries in the world in terms of number of units. Around 11% of Brazil's franchising sector are from foreign-based franchisors, which means that this franchising boom also provides an immense opportunity for international franchises looking to expand into Brazil.

Solid US jobs report provides shield for Obama

The US economy created a solid 163,000 jobs in July, the Labor Department said Friday, helping President Barack Obama dull attacks from his Republican rival as the White House race intensifies.

Although the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3 percent, the economy created many more jobs than expected, providing evidence that the world's largest economy is still on track.

"Finally, we have some good news on the employment front," said Nigel Gault, an economist with IHS Global Insight. "The report will alleviate fears that the US might be tipping back into recession."

Wall Street analysts had predicted the economy created 100,000 jobs during July.

The service, manufacturing, and food and drink sectors were among those showing gains, as the economy created more jobs than at any time since February.

With fewer than 100 days to go until the US presidential election, White House contenders seized on the report's seemingly mixed message in order to shape the tone of the debate.

Republican Mitt Romney zeroed in on the politically symbolic unemployment rate, which at 8.3 percent was the highest since February.

"Today's increase in the unemployment rate is a hammer blow to struggling middle-class families," Romney said in a statement, as he pledged to create 12 million jobs in his first term.

"We've now gone 42 consecutive months with the unemployment rate above eight percent. Middle-class Americans deserve better, and I believe America can do better."

The unemployment rate and the job creation figures are taken from two separate Labor Department surveys.

The rate is compiled through a survey of 60,000 households, while the payrolls increase comes from a poll of 140,000 businesses and government agencies.

The number of jobs created in July may make it difficult for Romney to steer the debate back onto the economy and away from issues that have seen him drop in the polls.

The last month has seen Romney criticized for not releasing more tax returns, for diplomatic missteps, for his dealings at Bain Capital and his tax plan -- which independent analysts said would raise rates for the middle class.

That has resulted in Obama opening up a two-point lead in national tracking polls as he pulls away in key swing states like Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, leaving Romney with plenty to do if the election is not to slip through his fingers.

The White House said the report provided "further evidence that the US economy is continuing to recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression."

Democrats will also take hope from the fact that unemployment among Hispanics fell 0.7 points to 10.3 percent and the rate for adult women stood basically unchanged at 7.5 percent -- both groups are crucial for Obama to win the election.

Obama's top economic adviser Alan Krueger echoed the Labor Department's observation that the unemployment rate was "essentially unchanged."

"The rate rose from 8.217 percent in June to 8.254 percent in July," well within the report's margin of error, he said.

US markets swept aside the slight uptick in unemployment.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 1.6 percent or 209 points while the government's cost of borrowing fell.

Friday's data is unlikely to be instrumental in deciding whether the Federal Reserve embarks on a new round of stimulus spending.

Before the Fed meets in September policymakers will receive August's jobs report.

LONDON (Reuters) - The home fans were chanting 'Becky, Becky' but Katie Ledecky got there first.

Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington, the 800 meters freestyle world record holder and golden girl of British swimming after her surprise double gold haul in Beijing four years ago, surrendered her crown to the 15-year-old American.

In fact, it was more a case of Ledecky ripping it unceremoniously off her head with a performance that heralded the arrival of another prodigious talent from the other side of the Atlantic.

The girl from Bethesda, Maryland, led for all but one length of the pool and then swam inside Adlington's world record all the way to the final turn before settling for the second fastest time ever.

Adlington finished third and well beaten in her favorite distance.

Ledecky's time of eight minutes, 14.63 seconds was the fastest time this year, faster than the time set at the U.S. trials last month where she slashed five seconds off her best and led from start to finish.

It was also a U.S. record, shattering the mark of 8:16.22 set by 1988 and 1992 gold medalist Janet Evans that had stood since 1989.

So quick, indeed, that she was asked at a news conference when she eventually emerged from anti-doping about the suspicions that had swirled around Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen earlier in the competition.

Her entry on Wikipedia had already been defaced by an unknown hand.

She dismissed any such insinuation as 'totally false'.

"I've just been setting a lot of short term and long term goals," said the swimmer who will be a sophomore in high school when she returns home. "And working my butt off and just getting faster."

The youngest member of the entire 530 member U.S. team in London told how Michael Phelps, who has more Olympic gold medals (17) than she has years, and 17-year-old Missy Franklin had also spurred her on.

"It's amazing," she gasped. "Michael was the first Olympian I ever met when I was six (years old), right before I started swimming.

"So just to hear a good luck from him before the race was really cool and I just thought back to that and it really calmed me down and I was ready to swim my race."

Franklin, who won 200 backstroke gold on another triumphant evening for the U.S. swimmers, also wished her luck.

That meeting with Phelps, at the University of Maryland in 2003, came after the man who would be the greatest swimmer of all time had already made his debut as a 15-year-old at the Sydney Olympics in 2000.

"We were walking back to our car after a final session and he was walking to his car along with some other athletes," she recalled of an occasion that had remained stamped on her mind despite her tender years.

"We got his autograph and he kept walking to his car with his iPod and then sort of waved at us."
