Hands-on with Kyocera Hydro, a waterproof Android 4.0 smartphone (video)

It's been a while since we've seen a Kyocera smartphone for the US market, and if you'll recall, its previous two attempts -- the Milano and Echo -- didn't manage to sway many consumers. Today, the company is adding two new Android handsets to the deck: the Hydro and Rise. True to its name, the Hydro plays off of Kyocera's experience in the waterproof segment, and while it's not mil-spec, the phone's able to withstand submersion at depths of up to one meter for a half-hour. The Hydro is a CDMA handset, although Kyocera is keeping the carrier close to its chest.

The Hydro will ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, and we're pleased to report that the interface is largely unmolested, save for Kyocera's app to conserve battery life -- whether the carrier dictates future changes remains to be seen. Beyond the OS and the waterproof aspect, however, it's rather humdrum in the spec department. It features a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC with a 1GHz CPU, a 3.5-inch, 480 x 320 display, a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. Because the screen is an IPS LCD, the quality is definitely a step-above your run-of-the-mill TFT-LCD mainstays, although it's hard to ignore the low-res image quality. The Hydro also offers 512MB of RAM, 2GB of built-in storage and a 2GB microSD card. In terms of connectivity, you'll find 802.11n (WiFi), Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and EV-DO Rev. A. The handset itself is comfortable to hold, though its plasticky build materials reinforce the fact that it's a low-end handset. While the Hydro doesn't blaze any new trails, it may very well be suitable for those on a budget who'd like a phone that can handle life's accidents. Follow the break for our hands-on video.

HTC One V headed to the U.S. this summer

Alongside its Droid Incredible 4G LTE announcement, HTC also revealed that the One V, it's new entry-level smartphone, will be headed to the U.S. from a "variety of partners" this summer. No specific dates, prices or networks were announced. but the One V is a good bet for pre-paid or regional carriers.

Inside its chinny, Legend-like chassis, the One V sports a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon CPU, 512MB of RAM and a WVGA (800x480) SuperLCD2 display. As you might imagine, it's running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4 on the software side. There's also a 5MP HTC ImageSense camera, which we found performed better than any entry-level smartphone camera we'd tested, even putting the Galaxy Nexus's 5MP shooter to shame.

Prodigy Hooks Up With T.I., Wiz Khalifa For H.N.I.C. 3

There was a time when Prodigy refused high-powered collaborations: When his Mobb Deep partner Havoc urged Pee to jump on the Notorious B.I.G.'s 1997 "Last Day," a song Hav produced, Prodigy declined.

Those days are over, and on Prodigy's upcoming H.N.I.C. 3 LP, fans can expect to hear not only V.I.P., but T.I., Wiz Khalifa, Havoc and Willie from Day 26 as well.

"I wanted to use people that were kinda hard to get and also you wouldn't think that I would collab with them," Prodigy told "RapFix Live" host Sway Calloway on Wednesday's show. "You wouldn't think that Pee would have a song with them right now."

Prodigy didn't yet have a title for the track with T.I. because the pair had just finished recording it Tuesday night, but he was able to dish a bit on the song with the Taylor Gang captain: "The Wiz record is called 'Co-Pilot.' That one is dope," he bragged with a sheepish grin.

Fans will have to hold out until July 3 to hear H.N.I.C. 3 in full, but Pee promises it will be well worth the wait. It's been four years since he released H.N.I.C. Pt. 2, and while the original H.N.I.C. is well-regarded in hip-hop circles, Prodigy admits to rushing production on the second installment. "I had a limited amount of space to do it before I had to turn myself in," he said of his three-year jail stint for gun possession.

Most of the material for the next LP, however, was written during his incarceration. "The third one, I spent a lot of time working on it. I did my little bid, there years or whatever, and that's basically when I was writing most of this album," Prodigy explained. "So, I got to really take my time with the concepts, the lyrics, how I want it to be, be really precise with it and really come up with something that can last a long time."

It's always refreshing to hear the head of a major corporation cop to past mistakes -- particularly in front of a large crowd of on-lookers. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted some misgivings about the way the carrier handled iPhone data, telling a crowd at the Milken Institute's Global Conference in Los Angeles, "My only regret was how we introduced pricing in the beginning, because how did we introduce pricing? Thirty dollars and you get all you can eat." Stephenson drove the point home by adding, "Every additional megabyte you use in this network, I have to invest capital."

And, for the record, that certainly wasn't the only thing about the iPhone that kept the exec up at night. Stephenson again,

You lie awake at night worrying about what is that which will disrupt your business model," he said. "Apple iMessage is a classic example. If you're using iMessage, you're not using one of our messaging services, right?

No one ahead said it was easy being the chief.
